In 1947, Albania was informed about the mass arrests of communists in Greece.

In early 1947, an intelligence document that reached Albanian state authorities described in detail the repression that the Greek monarchist government was carrying out against communist and leftist activists throughout the country. Large numbers of leftist activists, leaders, and sympathizers were being arrested, sentenced, or sent into exile , while their organization was accused of participating in a “communist conspiracy.”

At the top of the document it says:

“The monarchist government of Greece has begun a savage campaign of persecution against communists and their supporters throughout the country.”

According to the document, several hundred leaders of communist and trade union branches have been arrested , and hundreds more have been sentenced without trial .

“Those who support the left are accused of participating in the so-called ‘communist conspiracy,’ while the only truth is their participation in protests against injustice.”

The document continues with a clear call:

“It is necessary to organize an international mobilization of unions, political organizations and friends of democracy to stop this terror that is taking place in Greece.”

He emphasizes that:

“We believe that it is the duty of every democracy, of every anti-fascist movement, to take measures to demand from the Greek government: the immediate release of those arrested, a full and fair investigation, as well as guarantees for their political life and activity.”

At the end of the document, an appeal is made:

“We ask for your help in distributing this appeal, in getting it into the hands of international organizations, and in increasing diplomatic pressure on Greece in the international arena.”
