The correspondence described in the Albanian article concerns official press subscriptions intended for Enver Hoxha. It brings together administrative details about ordering publications, forwarding catalogues and settling invoices. The titles mentioned include Soviet and French periodicals, reflecting the range of foreign publications available through these arrangements.
Two stages in the correspondence
The Albanian account identifies a letter dated 20 September 1952 concerning a Soviet book and subscription office on Stalin Boulevard and an accompanying catalogue. It also describes a 1955 instruction associated with Haxhi Kroi and the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party of Labour of Albania, requesting subscriptions and the forwarding of invoices.
These administrative records concern the ordering and payment process. They should be distinguished from a personal reading diary or a record of annotations made by the intended recipient.
Publication titles should retain their names
Among the names given in the Albanian article are Pravda, La Pensée, Les Lettres françaises and Voprosy Istorii. Translating Pravda simply as “Truth”, or Les Lettres françaises as “French Letters”, makes it harder to identify the actual publication.
The French National Library’s catalogue identifies Les Lettres françaises as a Paris publication, while its Gallica collection preserves issues of La Pensée. The combined list therefore cannot accurately be described as consisting entirely of Soviet publications. A subscription office’s name does not determine the country of publication of every title ordered through it.
What subscriptions can tell us
A subscription list can help reconstruct the supply of information to a political office, its administrative routines and the publications considered worth acquiring. It does not by itself demonstrate that Hoxha personally read every issue, agreed with its contents or used it to control information. Such conclusions require further evidence, such as annotated copies, reading notes or related correspondence.
Sources and identification
Bibliothèque nationale de France: Les Lettres françaises; Gallica: La Pensée, January 1953. These bibliographic records identify the publications; they do not authenticate the Albanian subscription correspondence.
The complete subscription lists, the precise dates of the letters and their archival references should be checked against the original documents before a complete transcription is published.
