Fan Noli on the National Liberation War – Boston Letter in November 1944

Fan Noli me familje

In November 1944, while Albania was on the verge of complete liberation from the German invaders, in the city of Boston (Massachusetts) , patriotic Albanians of the diaspora gathered to greet the representative of the Albanian government who was expected to arrive in the USA , to show the real situation of the country and to strengthen the connection with the homeland. The document includes a strong speech by Fan Noli , who expressed unequivocally in support of the National Liberation War and its leaders , calling them “the guarantee for the future of Albania”.

The meeting was held on November 18, 1944 , in an atmosphere charged with emotion and hope. At the center of the discussions was the arrival of the diplomatic representative of Albania , to bring news from the country and to seek the help of patriots in the United States.

A fragment of the letter stated:

“When this representative arrives, he will inform us about the situation and needs of Albania, and we will know what we need to do to help the patriots who have saved the country with blood.”

But the highlight of this gathering was Fan Noli’s speech .

“Fan Noli said that these leaders who are at the forefront of the war should be supported unconditionally, without hesitation and without reservations , because they have earned the trust of the Albanian people.”

Noli emphasized that:

“In this battle, the fate of Albania was determined. These men have led the people with blood, with courage and with honesty. And for this, they have earned the right to lead the peace as well.”

Reflecting on the past, he said:

“Those who have brought Albania to this state, who have left it in destruction and poverty, cannot return with old names, to impose them on a people who have fought for freedom.”

Then, the document also mentions the festive scene of November 28 , in which Fan Noli:

“Expressed his admiration for the National Liberation War and recognised without hesitation the Democratic Government of Albania as the first democratic government of the Albanian people .”
